1/28/2011: Ute Players Volunteer at Stansbury Elementary
During the last week of January, Utah Lacrosse players helped out with the after school program at Stansbury Elementary in West Valley City, UT to teach kids about Lacrosse.

Most every kid had not even heard of the sport of lacrosse let alone played before, so the Utes were able to show them something truly different.

"There really is something special about watching a kid pick up a lacrosse stick for the first time" said Offensive Coordinator Rick Kladis. "You just see that look of curiosity, confusion, and excitement all at once - its just a great thing."

The players started off with just a quick lesson about the sport, and then each kid was able to learn how to throw and catch.

Each group of kids was able to play for a half hour before rotating to one of the other activities teachers and volunteers have for them as part of the after school activities program. There were even a few kids who tried to sneak back into the lacrosse session because they had so much fun.

Each session would always end with the kids taking shots on a Utah player being goalie in the mini "rage cage" that Face Off Lax, a local lacrosse store donated for the week-long event.

When asked what their favorite part of the lesson was, 4th grader Louis didn't hesitate to say "I scored twice - they taught me how to celebrate!"

Each of the kids was given a Utah Lacrosse lanyard, or "necklace" as they all called it which they wore with great pride. Sophomore attackman Zach Harris said, "It is amazing to see how grateful these kids are for just a little thing like a lanyard and half an hour of something fun."

Participating in the project were Ute players Zach Harris, Riley Greenwood, Dane Wangsgard, Nick Merrell, Alex Wee, Sam Schwoebel, Chris DaCarr, Harrison Hawkes, Steve Glauser, and Offensive Coach Rick Kladis.

A very big thank you to Face Off Lax for donating the mini rage cage for the event!
